St. Augustine Record letter: Saving Anastasia Island

Letter: Island losing its beauty to development

Editor: I have been a resident of St. Johns County for over 20 years. My wife and I moved here because of the overall quality of life in St. Augustine. We live on Anastasia Island in a very small community. We find the quality of life here to be very nice.

However, we also see what is happening to this beautiful island. It is becoming a very over-crowded place, and being destroyed by the over-building of homes on such a small island.

It appears to me that there is no planning on the overall future of this pristine island.

The property being developed on Pope Road, Mizell Road and 16th Street is one example of allowing money to determine the future of our beautiful island.

The developer has destroyed the habitat of thousands of birds, turtles, deer and many other creatures that once lived there. They have cut down almost all of the trees. How sad!

If there are any ordinances that cover saving the trees and habitats of animals, it did not appear they were applied to this development. It seems as though the county commission will not be satisfied until the island is covered in cement.

There is one thing that I believe when it comes to politics — money talks. I truly hope that in the upcoming election that the people will talk with their votes.
