SUN-SENTINEL
Republicans are a strange breed. Jeb Bush wears a skull cap to woo Jewish votes. Joe Saviak, campaign manager for Tim Ireland _ the Republican who is running against Bill Nelson, the Democrat candidate for reelection as insurance commissioner _ woos Jewish votes by slandering Nelson as an alleged antagonist to Holocaust survivors and families. This oxymoronic situation needs more than the outline presented in the Associated Press article in your Aug. 5 issue.

My wife is a Holocaust survivor, who has never heard of the Saviak committee for justice for Holocaust survivors. Who and what is this committee? Who is financing their scurrilous anti-Nelson ads?

Nelson needs no apologists. Victims of the Holocaust and their families have been and are being well-represented by him in his pioneering and ongoing efforts to enforce the obligation of the banks and insurance companies that have victimized survivors out of astronomic sums.

This is a new brand of anti-Semitism _ vilification of an ardent supporter of Jewish rights. Saviak has deliberately avoided calling attention to Nelson's actions against the banks and insurance companies involved. The recent all-day meeting in Miami Beach _ arranged by Nelson _ in which one of the leading insurance companies involved was closely interrogated by Nelson and his staff as to the avoidance of payment of claims, is clear evidence of Nelson's pro-victims stand. The same is also true of his action in dropping Swiss banks from the Joint Underwriting Association line of credit if the lawsuit against them is not settled.

If Jeb Bush is sincere in trying to woo the so-called ``Jewish vote,'' he should disavow the Ireland-Saviak smear.
