Letter: Political sign thefts going up?

Letter: Political sign thefts going up?

Editor: I realize that during an election year a few political signs may be stolen or vandalized. But this year the number of thefts and sign defacing in our county seem to be on the rise.

My neighbors and friends have reported having their signs stolen on more than one occasion. A number of them have told me they have replaced their signs up to as many as four times.

It is a criminal offense to steal or deface a sign located on a persons property and is punishable under the laws of the State of Florida and of St. Johns County.

Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of our democracy and this is particularly true during the elections.

Please point out to the citizens of St. Johns county that anyone caught removing or defacing a political sign will be reported to our local law enforcement officials.

My neighbors and friends are committed to advising these officials (via license plate number or physical identification) of anyone seen committing this criminal act.

Let's all work together to help maintain our right to free speech during this election.
