• Brown's initial conviction on fraud and tax charges was overturned in 2021 and she took a plea bargain and avoided a new trial.
• Although initially ordered to pay over $500,000 in restitution, Brown's final payment amounted to about $62,650.

Former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown has paid her debt to society. There’s a receipt to prove it.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has released a lien for money the 12-term Democratic member of Congress from Jacksonville was ordered to pay after her 2017 conviction on fraud and tax charges.

A notice announcing that release was filed March 19 in the Duval County Courthouse.

Brown served about 27 months of a five-year prison term before being sent home over pandemic-era health concerns and was sentenced to time served when she took her plea deal.

That deal locked in a roughly $62,650 restitution order ― which Brown has now retired ― but she apparently didn’t have to pay most of the $515,166 order from 2017, since those convictions were erased.

Brown had already paid about $31,000 of that larger sum before her conviction was thrown out, with that money going toward repaying people the courts originally considered fraud victims, mostly Brown supporters who had donated money to a sham youth charity, One Door for Education, that the congresswoman endorsed.

Brown’s former chief of staff, Elias “Ronnie” Simmons, and One Door leader Carla Wiley had been ruled “jointly and severally” responsible with Brown for making about $452,000 of the original restitution, so the government would collect from whoever produced the restitution first. A court filing in December 2023 said Simmons had satisfied a restitution order and special fee but still owed on a forfeiture set at in 2017 at about $728,000.
