Visitors to St. Johns County want interactive, memorable experiences, not just museums filled with stuffed deer, broken crockery and dioramas.

Since December, PGAV Destination Consulting, a St. Louis, Mo., firm, has been gathering facts about local tourism, and its preliminary phase shows that visitors want more interactive opportunities and activities.

In addition to the arts and concerts for adults, interactive activities include eco-tourism or nature-based programs and children’s activities.

Glenn Hastings, the TDC’s executive director, said Monday that the second phase of the $300,000 study has begun and involves focus groups, research projects and analyzing the county’s tourism assets.
