CRA Announces Hayling Plaza Construction Mobilization

 

Park will remain open while under construction

 

Construction mobilization will begin today for the Hayling Plaza Project at Dr. Robert B. Hayling Freedom Park, in Lincolnville.  The project is funded through the City of St. Augustine Community Redevelopment Agency and its Lincolnville Community Redevelopment Area (LCRA).  After a formal solicitation process, GEC Trucking & Construction, Inc. was awarded the project contract. During the construction process, the park will remain open with fencing around the work site.

 

The Hayling Plaza Project honors the legacy of Dr. Robert B. Hayling, a pivotal leader in St. Augustine’s Civil Rights Movement, whose courage and advocacy helped shape the city’s history. The project includes the installation of a commemorative statue recognizing his contributions and enduring impact.

 

Once completed, Hayling Plaza will serve as a meaningful public space for reflection, education, and community gatherings; further enriching the cultural and historical significance of the park within the Lincolnville Community Redevelopment Area. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be announced to formally unveil the commemorative statue of Dr. Robert B. Hayling.

 

Dr. Robert B. Hayling Freedom Park and Eddie Vickers Park represent over 25 acres of recreational space situated in the southeastern area of the Lincolnville Community. The masterplan, adopted in October 2023, conceptualizes a multiphase project inclusive of gathering areas, improved walking paths, sports courts, seating areas, a dog park, kayak launch, and historic signage representative of individuals with historically significant relevance to the 1964 Civil Rights Movement and other matters of historical significance within the Lincolnville Community.
