For the first time since 2014, St. Johns County Commission and St. Augustine Beach City Commission had a joint meeting.
One of the agenda items was replacing the decrepit St. Johns County Pier, built circa 1984, and shortly thereafter shredded by a Nor'easter, with half of it destroyed.
The pier is nearing the end of its useful life.
At the podium, I pointed out to the nine Commissioners (JAY MORRIS was absent), that by pledging bed tax money over 30 years, St. Johns County could replace the pier, with a solid one.
I've said it before, and I cited the Florida law that allows this.
After the meeting, I talked to County Administrator MICHAEL DAVID WANCHICK, who said, "I'm not borrowing any money."
I've since talked to three Commissioners, who were shocked.
County Commission Vice Chairman Henry Dean said that's not Mr. Wanchick's determination to make. Two St. Augustine Beach Commissioners agreed.
County Administrator MIKE WANCHICK is a crony of Sheriff DAVID SHOAR; the two are noted for speaking to government groups about how county officials and sheriffs should get along. WANCHICK has two Master's degrees and is the former City Manager of Richardson, Texas and former Assistant County Administrator of Broward County, Florida.
Since 2014, WANCHICK and St. Johns County government staff have failed to provide any documents in response to my records request relating to the September 2, 2010 shooting of Michelle O'Connell in the home of Deputy JEREMY BANKS (water use records for 4700 Sherlock Place).
In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
