Letter: Supports David Shoar

Editor: I am writing in response to the numerous letters to the editor supporting Glenn Lightsey for sheriff. Electing the next sheriff should be more about evaluating each candidate's credentials and leadership experience, rather than who has the best sound bite or received the most money from a favored source.

While Glenn Lightsey may be a fine man who many of us know personally and like, the fact is David Shoar clearly possesses more leadership and experience.

A review of Mr. Lightsey's law enforcement record reveals a lack of recent leadership. As stated on his Web site, Lightsey became an investigator at the State Attorney's office in 1993. This position had little or no supervisory responsibility and Lightsey reported to the chief investigator in Daytona. As a result, Lightsey has not been in a substantive leadership or command position in any law enforcement agency since 1993. Rather, Mr. Lightsey's more recent experience has been working as a police officer for the Duval County School Board -- that's in Jacksonville.

Even a cursory review of David Shoar's record shows that Shoar has significant experience and demonstrated leadership. See www.davidshoar.com . Since 1991, Shoar has continuously served in a supervisory position at the St. Augustine Police Department where he is currently the chief of police. During this same period, Shoar has commanded soldiers in the Florida Army National Guard.

Being sheriff is about managing a large operation and leading people. With Lightsey we get unknown and unproven abilities with an 11 year hiatus from supervising others. On the other hand, Shoar offers a steady rise through the ranks at the police department and National Guard.

As we go to the polls, we must vote for the most capable candidate.
