We are all inspired by the Greatest Generation: they helped the world defeat fascism, ending fascist evildoers' grip on Europe and Asia.
On June 6, 1944, my father, then 31 years old, was one of the oldest of some 11,000 soldiers who parachuted into Normandy. They called him "the old man."Dad landed on a French farmer's roof in Sainte-Mère-Église. Thinking my father was a British pilot, the French farmer offered to hide my dad from the Nazis. Dad replied, "I have to go fight." Before the sun had risen on D-Day, those 11,000 brave American soldiers, including my father, had liberated the first French town liberated from Nazism.
Like the Greatest Generation before us, in FDR's words at Franklin Pield in Philadelphia 1936, Americans today have a "rendezvous with destiny." And as anti-slavery abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison wrote, "we shall be heard."
Floridians are good people.
We've put up with a lot these past few years.
One-party rule has resulted in authoritarian rule in Florida and in St. Johns County.
That one-party rule has run St. Johns County for 25 years.
Faster than a speeding dump truck, what we know and love in St. Augustine and St. Johns County are being destroyed by greedy corporations and dodgy Limited Liability Corporations. Swathed in secrecy and represented by fancy-bears law firms, Big Business is ruining our County. Reckless feckless fraudfeasors, lawyers and lobbyists write our laws.
As our City's patron saint, Saint Augustine himself wrote, "an unjust law is no law at all." The result of all of these unjust laws are a wave of death, deforestation, clearcutting, wetland-filling, wildlife-killing, overcrowded schools, hundreds of portable classrooms, clogged roads and unaffordable housing, Under all-Republican misrule, an orgy of overdevelopment is turning God's country into a clearcut Hellscape, an unreasonable facsimile of Broward County..
Every single overdevelopment vote on St. Johns County Commission was by all-Republican Commissioners, elected with developer ca$h. Every single Commission vote in this century for overdevelopment was by Republicans. No Democrats have served on Commission in 25 years.
Overdevelopment's origins, etiology and costs are all concealed by secrecy and corruption.
Our corrupt County has no lobbying registration ordinance: it was blocked by lobbyists, including former Commission PRISCILLA "RACHAEL" BENNETT, who persuaded Ponte Vedra Commissioner JAY Lisa Morrison, former RPM International EVP, that a $25 annual registration fee would be "burdensome."
Our corrupt County lacks a welcoming spirit. It has no Ombudsman. It stiffs records requesters. It shows open notorious hostility to exercising free speech rights.
Our County is run by corporate oligarchs, who inflict their will through idiosyncratic choices in picking developer puppets as successive County Administrators, including fired County Administrator MICHAEL DAVID WANCHICK and unqualified HUNTER SINCLAIR CONRAD, an unindicted coconspirator in a federal bribery case where he was accused of taking $8000 in campaign contributions for Clerk of Courts, "intended as a bribe."
As Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, "secrecy is for losers, for people who don't understand the value of the information."
This corruption of our government is indefensible, and must be ended at once.
We shall defeat the formidable forces of fascism here in DeSANTISTAN and St. Johns County.
Yes we can!
Yes we will!
