St. Augustine homeowner gets D.R. Horton to pay to fix leaking roof

A St. Augustine homeowner got the largest homebuilder in the country to pay up to fix what he says is a construction mistake.
It comes four months after an Action News Jax Investigation into D.R. Horton.
We reported that some D.R. Horton homeowners were complaining the roofs on their pricey new homes were leaking and the company wasn’t honoring their warranties.
Navy veteran Roger Carman told Action News Jax in November the roof of his $360,000 D.R. Horton home was leaking.
“My psychiatrist has actually had to triple my dose of Xanax just to keep my anxiety level down,” said Carman.
“We saw the story and saw he was a military veteran that was struggling with an issue on his home,” said Reliant Roofing president Cameron Shouppe.
Carman suspected the holes for his vents were cut too large and it was letting water in.
That’s exactly what Reliant Roofing found.
Reliant Roofing took photos they say show the holes were cut 6-8 inches too wide.
They fixed it and, after months of back and forth, they got D.R. Horton to reimburse them.
“[Homeowners] need to get a third-party expert involved so that they have someone on their side. You’ve always got to have someone on your side so you’re not getting, you know, the half-truth and make sure you’re always getting the whole truth,” said Shouppe.
In November, D.R. Horton blamed the leaks on Hurricane Irma.
On Friday, Action News Jax asked D.R. Horton’s media relations team if the company asked its subcontractors to make sure they’re cutting vent holes the appropriate size.
A spokesperson did not answer our questions, only recommending “any customer experiencing a concern with their home to submit a warranty request.”
